High school education

Scholarships allocated

To complete high school education is, at present, the largest challenge of the national agenda. According to official sources, the number of young people with access to high school education has increased in the last four year period, but no effort is enough to guarantee total coverage. The average education level is of 8.9 years.

Bécalos has detected the need to promote high school education and diminish the desertion levels, since at present only 60.1% of the students finish their studies in this level. Through its alliances with the UNAM, the IPN, Prepar@te, the Cecyte and state high schools, Bécalos allocates living expenses scholarships for the low income students in this education level.

During the four years of the Program, several states have creates their own scholarship programs for high school education together with Bécalos and the Sub-ministry for High school education. In 2010 2,430 students graduated from high school from the IPN, the UNAM, the Veracruz state high schools, the program Prep@rate and CONALEP, besides the ones that graduated from the high schools in the Fundaciónes Quiera y Tarahumara. In addition to the 1,589 graduates’ from2009, Bécalos has helped 4,019 young people finish their high school education.

Continuity is an essential factor for the Program: many of its high school graduates are already in college.
